Alone usually refers to the condition of solitude.
Loneliness, the state of "feeling lonely", describes a human state or feeling involving isolation, or the feeling of disconnection with others, etc.
There is a big difference when a person needs to be alone as opposed to feeling loneliness.
I'm perfectly happy being alone. I rarely feel loneliness.
I sometimes feel that IFF members "project" their loneliness onto others.
