Of course, they have to be celebrated, but for that one needs mutual respect. And Gandhi said it clear: .. 'If it attends to be exclusive' .. in other words: not arrogant and irgonart. Else history will teach them a lesson, as other cultures got to realise.

Don't know how much its true but it has come at very high price to modern india paid by the ppl of ancient india and even today.
""Speaking in a conference at Allahabad on April 5, 1936, Mahatma Gandhi said the above about India Culture. It means that for the long life of a culture, it has to remove rigidity and avoid parochialism. The rigidity and parochialism are in fact two demerits which keep one isolated from others and ultimately prove themselves self-defeating or in other words result in self-destruction. As opposed to it, flexibility and liberality are the two attributes that bring on synthesis and continuity in life."" (source: GANDHI : An embodiment of Indian Cultural Heritage)
Well according to him in 1936 we can't LIVE exclusively. Now current scenario 2009, in this country hindus-muslims-christians-bodos-and many more- can't live together with peace and harmony. So the bottom line for me is its kind of an equation with complex-imaginary roots. Easier said and understood but non-existent.
we call INDIA multicultural etc etc and take great pride in being one, here's a brief on how we have achieved it.
Aryan invaders are supposed to have destroyed Indus Civilization in 1500 BC, one of the largest and flourishing settlements of ancient india. Thanx for their contribution to their hierarchial CASTE system.
Babur was a Muslim conqueror from Central Asia who, following a series of setbacks, finally succeeded in laying the basis for the Mughal dynasty of India. He was a direct descendant of Timur through his father, and a descendant also of Genghis Khan through his mother.
And the wreckage of temples ahem ahem!! plus the cost of innumerable lives. Thanx to him , we had a blood soaked partition in 1947.
Then the famous East India Company, and the missionaries who came along. Recently theres an escalating tension in some parts of india b/w hindus(mostly descendents of aryans) and christians.
In 327 BC Alexander the Great began his foray to conquer all the headwaters of the Indus River. Great Champ couldn't celebrate his 33rd b'day lest more gore on the streets. Else we could have had some GREEKS too in modern India.
The only ppl i believe who accepted INDIA, mingled with the culture here , never been trouble makers and are at peace in this homeland are the PARSIS who emigrated to the Indian subcontinent over 1,000 years ago after the Islamic invasion.
Now if the others before them could have only followed with their example this country would have been a better place.
From history it seems to me OTHERS won't let you have your own exclusive culture in the first place, waana survive then be smart to adapt with the situation.
Now-days Americanization is smart choice.
